Himalayan Sea Salt

It’s pink…..it’s pretty…..it….is…..Himalayan sea salt! It comes in many shapes and sizes, is the purest salt on the planet, and it just might become your new go-to…..for basically……everything. If you haven’t already heard, this salty goodness contains 84 essential minerals/trace elements, and fosters a healthy pH balance. And we all know how important maintaining a healthy pH is for our body! Wait, there’s more. Not only does Himalayan sea salt promote better sleep, but it also acts as a detoxifier, supports a healthy respiratory system, helps to lower blood pressure, boosts bone strength, prevents muscle cramps, and promotes healthy blood sugar. It is pure, with no pollutants, toxins, or chemicals. So if you think you are getting something similar to table salt…..you are way off!

I’ll give you a quick rundown of why you should think about breaking up with that bleached, white, table salt. Table salt is heavily processed to eliminate minerals, which would otherwise help to balance blood pressure, and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. Table salt contains additives that are designed to make it more free-flowing, such as ferrocyanide, talc, silica, and aluminum. Yikes!! Aluminum leads to neurological disorders, and talc is a known carcinogen that was once used in baby powders. Mmmmm……raise your hand if you want to pass on this!

The beautiful thing about Himalayan sea salt is the variety of other interesting ways you can use it! Himalayan sea salt comes in large course chunks, to fine ground, and every size in between. A few of my favorite brands are The Spice Lab, Terrasoul, and Natierra. Below I’ve listed some ways you can use Himalayan sea salt:

  • Salt Bath: This is a great way to detox. Finely ground salts are best for a salt bath, as it will dissolve easier and quicker. However, if you use larger salts, let them soak/dissolve in warm/hot water (water that will be used in the bath) prior to using them in the bath. You will need 1.5 – 2 cups of salt for one soaking session, and you should soak for about 35-45 minutes. Make sure to drink one 8 ounce glass of water immediately after your bath, as the detoxifying process can be dehydrating. Throw on some music, dim the lights, and enjoy your spa session!
  • Himalayan Salt Block: This is also called a Himalayan salt slab, board, plate, and dish. It basically looks like a large square cutting board, but entirely made out of Himalayan sea salt. You can use these to cook, grill, sear, and present chilled foods. Salt blocks can be safely heated and chilled to extreme temperatures. You never want to use detergent, soap, or cleansers on your salt block. However, it has powerful antimicrobial properties, so you don’t need to worry about cleaning it like you would a regular cutting/serving board. Minerals are naturally added to your food by cooking on a salt block, so the next time you’re cooking up some veggies for dinner…..try it on a Himalayan salt block! You can find this at Trader Joe’s, Crate and Barrel, and Bed Bath & Beyond.
  • Himalayan Salt Deodorant: Not only does Himalayan sea salt nourish and detox the skin, but it’s antibacterial, neutralizes bad body odor, and refreshes skin by soaking up excess sebum and sweat. Who knew! Try to add this to your morning routine, and feel good about cutting the aluminum and chemicals (found in regular deodorants/antiperspirants) out of your life! You can find salt deodorant on Amazon in a square bar or ball.
